Ward Clayton is an accomplished and respected Communications Professional, author and editor with 20-plus years’ experience and a broad understanding of the media, communications and public relations.
In his role as the Communications Director for Signature Group, he provides editorial and communications development and supervision for numerous clients. This has included an extensive campaign to provide international outreach for Myrtle Beach, S.C., one of the top golf destinations in the world; TruGolf, a leading golf course simulator software company; GOLFZON, the South Korean company that is a world leader in golf simulators; Clubs to Hire golf club travel provider; and fitness software provider Membr.
He also serves as the Content Director for Masters.com, overseeing editorial and photography areas, along with key oversight on the site’s look and direction. He undertook the role with the Augusta National Golf Club in 2011 as the Masters Tournament’s web site has grown to receive more than 450 million page views during the week of the Tournament.
He is the author of “Men on the Bag: The Caddies of Augusta National,” with a documentary on caddies scheduled for late 2016 that incorporates many of the Augusta National caddie story.
He has made international contacts in South America via a golf/travel venture to Colombia in early 2012. Clayton improved the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association’s communications, successfully gaining community support, state-level government participation, multiple media opportunities and a social networking startup for the group that aims to bring a retired destroyer to Jacksonville as an interactive attraction; public relations and communications support for the Florida Chamber Music Project in St. Johns County, Fla.; public relations for Red Bull with its sponsored athletes Rickie Fowler and Lexi Thompson; and editorial assistance with the Wounded Warrior Project. His writing has appeared in numerous publications and websites, including Golf Digest, the Wall Street Journal and pgatour.com. He has served as the editor for a PGA Tour publication, the bi-annual PGA Tour Essential Guide, and writes weekly for lpga.com.
He has an award-winning track record in the journalism field, including a 10-year stint as the sports editor of The Augusta Chronicle. As the Director of Editorial Services for the PGA Tour, he was recognized for guiding excellent content development, including the Annual Report, coordination with the Marketing Department, writing letters for Commissioner Tim Finchem and assisting in the transition to a digital platform for the PGA Tour’s communications pieces. Additionally, he is a member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the Jacksonville, Fla., representative for the PR Consultants Group, a collaborative of PR agencies in the top 50 U.S. markets.
Ward is a Durham, N.C., native and a graduate of the University of North Carolina. He and his wife, Elizabeth, live in St. Johns, Fla., with their two children.
